The Story Behind Roast Pilot

I'm Scott Carter, and I've spent more than twelve years chasing the perfect coffee roast.

I started where a lot of us start: a simple air popper on the patio. As the obsession grew, so did the builds. I spent years perfecting what I came to call my Frankenroasters — bread machines, water kettles, anything I could hack together to see how far I could push the bean. If it could hold heat and tumble coffee, I probably tried to automate it.

Eventually I needed real volume, and I stepped up to a gas grill drum roaster. I loved the capacity immediately. Then I hit a wall.

I'm a software developer. I'm driven by data and repeatability, and on the grill I felt like I was roasting in the dark. There was no precision, and no way to truly monitor or control my roast profile — just sound, time, and a grill thermometer. I knew there had to be a way to bring professional-level data to a backyard setup.

That's why I built Roast Pilot: a hardware and software ecosystem made specifically to take the guesswork out of gas grill roasting. It gives you real-time, precise control over both your grill environment and your bean temperature, and it turns a manual process into a repeatable one — so you can hit your target profile every single time you light the burners.
