I started roasting at home w/ a small kettle setup and, after a while, was "gifted" an old 4 lb RK drum. After about a year of roasting/getting familiar w/ the smaller RK drum (and eventually "macking" it out w/ thermocouples and dataloggers), it was time to size up with the big-boy drum and the Roast Pilot kit. As for customer service, Shane and Scott are super knowledgeable, helpful, and responsive and clearly love what they do.
Thanks, guys Mike V.

I purchased a $1500 6lb roaster in Sept25, my motor has stopped, can't get anyone to answer the phone, I need a replacement please! Call me Rick 720-436-1112
Response from the owner -
Richard, I'm sorry you had trouble with your motor. I'm hoping that us sending you a new motor got you up and running quickly. If you have a moment, let me know how things are working out. Happy Roasting! Thanks, Shane RK

Things are working great, thanks Shane
Communication about shipping and any questions were answered very promptly and customer service was outstanding. The roasts are consistent and the coffee that I’m able to produce is tasting great. I am very happy I went with this setup!

I still have much to learn regarding the roasting process but I feel I'm getting better each time I roast, making little changes here and there. I have been playing with ways to control my temperatures better and recently went to RK Drums website and seen that they now have a controller that allows you to control your temperatures with the ability to trend your bean temperature as well. Its called Roast Pilot and its amazing! Got it installed and did my first roast yesterday using it and am absolutely blown away on how well it works! Shane and Scott really knocked it out of the park and very helpful with the installation of the kit. Shane and Scott have been amazing to work with as always, very responsive and happy to help in any way! Roast Pilot takes roasting to the next level and I highly recommend it! Thanks Shane and Scott, excellent work guys!

Thanks Pete! I think you're the first to publicly weigh in on Roast Pilot. Thanks for your comments and we hope you enjoy it. Roast Pilot has been a dream for many. Thanks to Scott for bringing it to the platform!

Have had my drum roaster since 2006 and it's still going strong!
Bought my RKDrum in 2006 while living in Kona, HI. Picked and processed a couple of hundred pounds a coffee a year. Started roasting with a small roaster that held about 8 oz. After going through several small roasters I came across RKDrums. I got a 4 pound drum and it worked like a charm. I also grew cacao and roasted that in the drum. Worked really well. After going through several small roasters I came across RKDrums. I got a 4 pound drum and it worked like a charm. I also grew cacao and roasted that in the drum. Worked really well. We left HI and now live on the east coast. Did manage to bring about 80 pounds of green coffee beans with us. Haven't roasted in quite a while but I am about to start once again, just waiting for the rain to stop. Can't wait to have some Kona coffee!

Thanks you for a great review Susan! We really appreciate it. Hey we now have a bean temperature an gas controller addon, very helpful for roasting cacao since bean temperature is so important. Finally got that sorted out! Check under Products-Wifi Roast Controllers
Response from the owner -
Thanks Susan! You know that with RoastPilot on your RK Roaster, you now can know the cacao bean temp, which was previously not possible. I'd love for you to try it on cacao and provide some feedback!? Thanks for the review!
We’ve order numerous times from RK Drums and our experience is always great. Not only great customer service but their products are 10/10. We use many of their products for our coffee business.
Response from the owner -
Wendy, thanks for the great review and many years of roasting with RK! Here's to many more!

Thanks Aaron! We're glad you had a great experience. Don't hesitate to reach out if you want 1-on-1 training during the roast, or if you have any other question. Thanks-Shane
It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. How much money have I saved? Like a BILLION dollars! How delicious is my coffee? ALL DELICIOUS. ONLY DELICIOUS. ALL THE TIME!
Seriously. My mom bought this for me for my birthday. So good. I will never go back.
I bought an RK Drum over 15 years ago. After a few BBQs and several rotisseries, I still use my original drum every 10 days or so. You can't beat a quality, fresh, home roast. My family and friends are addicted! Thank you RK Drums for making such a durable product!
Several years of highly successful roasting at home. Friends prefer my coffee over great local shops.
Response from the owner -
Thanks Duane! So glad to hear you're getting great feedback from your coffee! Keep up the hard work!
I have have nothing, but positive experiences from my fist call. I was given all the information I was looking for when it came to choosing which drum size to start with. I went with the 12 lb "everything kit and just finished setting it up. My first order of 3 65lb bags will be here tomorrow! Very satisfied customer :)

Shane went above and beyond by calling me on the phone and walking me through my first three roasts after walking me through the process for about an hour beforehand. Shane and this company are very passionate about supporting the people and businesses who use their products, and they want the best for you. They don't just help you with setting up your roaster, they help you with everything required to start and advance your coffee business. As far as the roasting drum itself, it has worked perfectly for dozens of roasts, and it is clear that it is a very high quality product that will last for a very long time. I look forward to continuing to work with RK Drums moving forward for any needs that they can help with.

Thank J.T. We strive very hard to make equipment that lasts a lifetime. Do let us know if you need help

This cooler fit perfectly under the discharge of my roaster, and cools perfectly
Fantastic products. I purchased a 2 pound drum and rotisserie motor to build my roaster. There was a small hiccup with the drum, but Shane literally bent over backwards to take care of me. This is a top notch company that I will not hesitate to use again.
In this time of no customer service, finding a company that actually cares about its customers is quite refreshing.
You have always been responsive and gone above and beyond when it comes to customer service.
Hi Shane I just wanted to leave a few comments about our recent purchase. Hi Shane I just wanted to leave a few comments about our recent purchase. First thing is that I would recommend shipping the kits all together as opposed to from three or four places because it took 3 plus weeks and some calls and texting to assure delivery of everything purchased. Also shipping costs seemed very high. Second thing I found was the motor and motor mount did not line up very well which required me to add washers to square things up. Third issue was the 4lb roaster door was very hard to open and close until I filed it a bit along with the clasp to keep door shut is kind of difficult to operate. Again just wanted you to be aware of our experience with obtaining and assembling the kit. Hopefully we will enjoy the unit as I’m testing my first roast today.
Response from the owner -
Hi Mike! Thank you for your honest feedback. We really appreciate it. I wanted to at least respond to your comments. -Regarding multiple shipping. We do ship items separately as trying to ship one big heavy box usually results in damage to something or another. We've found the best way to ensure everything arrives intact is to ship separate. Additionally the ships on their own schedule as things complete fabrication. -Regarding the motor not lining up with the mount, can you provide more information here? First time I've heard of this -On the latch, occasionally USPS can damage the latch. This we have a fix for. Please send me pictures of that. I'll give you a call and we can talk it through. Thanks
Response from the owner -
Hi Mike. Thanks for the opportunity to chat with you. I now understand some of your issues.
I very much apologize your rotisserie was late. USPS sometimes has trouble with those, perhaps due to the odd shape and length. I hope us sending you a second rotisserie was a quick resolution.
We discussed the motor not lining up with the motor mount plate holes, please utilize the 4 washers on each side of the motor mount plate, per the video installation guide. The motor's pegs are not designed to insert into the plate, though it's very understandable why you would think this. The motor is designed to ride\slide on top of two sets of washers on either side of the plate.
We also discussed the latch being rigid and stiff. This is by design when new. As the drum heats and cools the latch loosens up to a comfortable level, as you discovered after the first roast. If it were loose when new, then in a couple of years it would be floppy and we wouldn't want that.
Thanks for illuminating some of your concerns, and giving us the opportunity to address them. If another customer reads this section, then they will likely have a bit more insight into the things you experienced.
As always, please reach out if you have the slightest concern or wish to do some co-roasting together. Please let me know if you have any other concerns
I was trying to leave a review, but got to here instead. I have been using the rk drum for about 5 years with excellent results. Maybe lost 2 batches total in the whole time , roasting outside in zero degree to 90 degree temperature range. I did overheat the drum during preheat once, and the latch lost it's temper and opened prematurely. And I burned the first batch. But all good since. It seems...
It seems the website is still not 100% bug free, - I get jitters when I try to scroll with a mouse. My question: what is your solution to rotisserie squeaking? - annoys the neighbors. Thanks for the well made products. -Duane
Response from the owner -
Hey Duane!
Thanks for the review. Please do let us know if you have any problems as we have solutions to almost everything. As to the squeaking, there occasionally can be squeaking coming from the bearing(s). This is a result of the metal on metal bearing. While we've tried other solutions, like sealed high heat bearings, and roller bearings, those always tend to gum up. The most reliable method, however, is these plain bearings.
You can put a drop or two of oil of any kind on that bearing groove to quiet things up. It won't last forever, but for a good long time. People use anything they can get their hands on. I knew one guy that used Crisco. I've personally been guilty of using motor oil. Not on the coffee of course, just that bearing. Motor oil is great for metal on metal and high heat. I have even run over to the car, and grabbed the dipstick out of the engine and dropped a couple of drops into the groove when I found myself without a bottle of oil. Also, 3-in-1 oil, just about anything. Lasts for a little while. A couple of drops now and again will fix it right up. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Shane. After several years of highly successful roasting, I forgot to set my timer and severely burnt the beans in the drum. (I was jet lagged!) Do you have any suggestions
It was an easy set up. The videos were perfect, easy to follow. The equipment was better than what I expected. The drum will last for many years. I started with a 2lbs drum and I'm thinking of an 8lbs drum already. Did 2 sample runs, coffee I got from Royal NY. Guatemalan coffee light roast took out at 1st crack and Colombian Supremo dark with a little oil. Probably a little too long. Maybe 2...

Thanks Raymond for the kind words. It's been a pleasure working with you. As always let us know if you need anything at all.
RK Drums are a hidden gem. The equipment is rock solid. Shane is a phenomenal mentor and I have sincerely appreciated and enjoyed working with him as he coaches us through the early stages of roasting. We are making some damn good coffee already, ready to sell at scale, with rookie experience and very small investment.
Shane & RK Drums team provide exceptional product & incredible service!
I highly recommend this company if you are interested in roasting coffee or expanding your operations with a cost effective and creative alternative roasting style! Perfect for DIY'ers that like to save money and make stuff! And roast delicious coffee☕️
Shane graciously gave me a ton of his time to explain how this system works and to answer all of my questions. I felt very confident placing my order because he is very knowledgeable about his product and clearly passionate about delivering a good product to his customers.
Shane is the penultimate professional - he guided me through my choices and options, he thought of the details and asked thorough and thoughtful questions and made equally appreciated recommendations. And the ultimate product is well built, works great and I know I have a resource for all my questions going forward.
Shane is extremely helpful!!! Full of knowledge. He gives every bit of information to succeed! The drum is great! I've done a few roasts and the are pretty good.
A little bit of difficulty navigating the site, but they had the parts I need and the capability for me to order them!
Response from the owner -
Hi Jordan, thanks for the review. Apologies for the site navigation during your recent time on the site. The mobile menus in particular had some bug that week which took some time to work out, and prevented navigation on mobile almost completely. That should be fixed now. Please let me know if you have any further trouble, or any questions at all. Thanks so much! Shan
Just top-notch, fast service. Shane was actually online on a Saturday and able to assist with a fix. Highly Recommended!
I purchased my RK Drum in June 2021 with the idea of roasting coffee as a side business. After roasting for a year, I lost a pretty well paying job and went full time roasting. Since then, we have increased production to roughly 200 pounds per week. Many customers say we have the best tasting coffee around and we are in a competitive market with multiple small, local Roasters. Thank you Shane for...

I have owned an 8# RK drum for about 8 years. It has roasted literally TONS of coffee! With all of the heating and cooling cycles the drum had gone through, one of the internal vanes gave way and needed to be repaired. I had a local welder lined up, but then I recalled the lifetime warranty so I decided to send it in. Here's my thank you: Hey, I know this is a bit delayed, but I want to thank you...

Hey, I know this is a bit delayed, but I want to thank you for your excellent customer service with this unusual drum repair! I am very happy that I didn't go with a local guy for this repair as you went above and beyond what I expected. All of the vanes are now firmly secured to the drum (no random burnt beans that drop out after riding around a few roasts, but now I can't make jokes about roasting those for CharBucks...) and you even installed a new latch! Excellent work! Thanks much!
Response from the owner -
Thanks a million for the awesome review and for trusting us with your 8# RK drum repair! We're stoked to hear that our customer service went above and beyond your expectations. It's great to know the drum repair went well, so no more burnt beans ruining your roasts. We may miss the CharBucks jokes, but we're glad we could deliver excellent work for you. If you ever need anything else, just give us a shout. Cheers!
Best regards, RK
Always helpful!!! 110% satisfaction!!

We purchased an 8lb drum setup from Shane and gave him a call and he helped us through some of our roasting process. We then bought a trailer, remodeled it and got it permitted as a coffee trailer. Then, out of nowhere, we got a call from Fox Sports stating they wanted to feature a local small business during a Super Bowl-adjacent commercial spot for a major accounting software. They picked our company and we're so excited to share the grilling process on national TV! Shane and his team build extremely durable roasting drums, and provide top notch customer service. With his help, roasting coffee became financially accessible to us, and gave us an eco-friendly way to roast coffee without the energy consumption of a massive roasting machine. And most people who try our coffee say it's some of the best coffee they've had - and they stopped using creamer because the black coffee is so good! We'd highly recommend RK Drums to anyone looking to get into roasting.
Thanks to Shane's videos, assembly was straight forward without any problems. I had an issue with my rotisserie latch getting bent and Shane responded promptly with how to fix it. Roasts are more even than on my Behmor 1600. Very satisfied with the product and service

Communication is stellar from Shane! Lots of help and willingness to make sure you have all your questions answered and needs met!
RK Drums was very helpful defining what we needed for their coffee roasting line. I'm surprised everyone isn't roasting coffee with their products.

Great experience! My latest purchase was some replacement grommets, they arrived in good time! Otherwise, I have been using my roaster since May 2021, and have nothing but positive feedback on it.

Truth is I've been reading about RKDrums and watching the videos for over a year. Aside from having one, I think I knew just about everything I could find on the web. The most stressful part was actually picking out the grill! Shane chatted with me on a Saturday afternoon for a solid hour answering all my questions. Like a good salesman, he related to my previous roasting experience on my electric drum roaster that gives me about 12 ounces after nearly 30 minutes of my time investment. Shane talked me up to a 6lb drum from the 2lb'r I was ready to buy. I ordered the DIY kit, and as unhandy as I am, had very little difficulty putting it together using his videos and a couple chats online for specifics I didn't buy my first trip to the Depot. I have already done a few roasts, and while Shane offered to coach me through a roast, it's actually very easy and my fear of turning 5 lbs of beans to charcoal hasn't happened yet. Such a fun well made product, excellent service, and I have a line of friends and family waiting for their free samples! Great job Shane and team!
Shane is great. This is our 4th RK drum on our custom built roasters and they work really well. Our longest tenured RK drum is the 8lb drum and it's been through at least 25,000 pounds of roasting and despite a little user error early on is roasting strong to this day. We've since added 3 of the 12 pounders and they're rocking. Shane is always nearby to answer questions should ya have them.
What an eye opening experience this has been! I’m here because of a recommendation from another friend who also owns a 12 lb roaster and after seeing what it could do I decided to get my own. Shane has been an amazing guide from his online videos to immediate responses on any and all questions going above & beyond to make sure we are working at full potential. I’m happy beyond words & so excited...

I came across the site while searching for roasting info (I was looking for roasting temp info to restart roasting after a two year hiatus), and was thrilled to find you. I'm even more thrilled that you now carry cooling trays (cooling was always something for which I never had a very good solution), and now have one on order.
Thanks!
The drum is awesome. I started with a retrofit of one of those drums you can find on that "Amazin" distribution companies website and fell in love with roasting coffee. Didn't even know I was missing out till I got the RK drum. The roast is far more even across the 2 pounds with far fewer throw out beans than in the other. Didn't even know I was missing out till I got the RK drum. The roast is far more even across the 2 pounds with far fewer throw out beans than in the other. I can only assume this due to the quality of materials used as The RK drum is way higher quality. The beans come to temp much faster and the drum retains heat far better. Thanks to RK for making my coffee in the am even better.
Shane was so helpful in answering questions about which drum was best for us. We have an unusual set up and he helped us plan the best set up. This is our second drum and SO far exceeds the first one we used. The drum is solid, the rotisserie mechanism very smooth to operate, the latches very sturdy. The system is a pleasure to use. We highly recommend RK Drums to anyone looking to roast outdoors!
I ordered a 2lb drum and had some issues with it. Shane went above and beyond to correct the issue and get me a new drum delivered fast. I feel he truly cares that his product is quality made and he will back what he sells. Also that his customers are happy with what he sells.
I am very happy with my setup. The drum and motor are well built and the videos were great to help put everything together. I had questions with instillation being left handed, Shane was online within minutes and helped me troubleshoot.
Fantastic, this was easy. It is a great roaster. Videos explained everything I needed to know. Shane was fantastic and easy to reach for questions. Great experience! Bob

Since home-roasted coffee had become something my entire family--both home and extended--depended on and valued even a few day break in getting back up and running seemed a problem in need of a fast fix. Shane at RK Drum took immediate interest and spent a substantial amount of time helping me figure out what I needed to do. (In retrospect it turned out to be straightforward and even simple though that was not obvious to me at the start.) He personally got the replacement motor ready and sent right away. Rewiring was simple. Shane recommended a Facebook explanation that turned out to be one of several for the use of the RK Drum--well worth browsing through for other information. Great company, a great product and very helpful (and patient) staff....
Shane was very helpful in selecting the right product for my current needs as well as recommending a roaster that can fill any potential future growth in my roasting. The product is excellent; heavy gauge drum, good motor, and strong bar. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to obtain a roaster at a reasonable cost.

Hand crafted with steel and fire ( which I have also brought on as a modo for the back of my bags...thanks for that one Shane ; ) Learn to roast with sight, sound, smell and time...all of which Shane is happy to help guide you along with...and you will be amazied in the quality of cup you can bring to the table. Like anything there are some learning curves involved...but so is life : ) But I will say I was able to work out the brunt of those learning curves in less than half a dozen roast at a smaller capacity. I know roast on my 12# drum 3x a week w/ consistency. Thanks to everyone at Rk who takes the time to put in the work to bring an amazing product to the table w/o having to sell the farm !

I am a hobby roaster and have had the 8LB, RK Drum coffee roaster for about 10 years and roasted well over a thousand pounds of coffee beans. It is a great roaster that allow me to roast small batch beans and customize the roast for the individual. Every thing from a light, medium, city, full city roast and any thing in between. Making for great gifts that satisfies the individuals taste. This summer I noticed that the base of the unit had a slight weld separation. I contacted RK Drums and they did not ask how long have you had the drum or what did you do to the drum. I was told to pack the Drum and send it in. RK Drums would check out and repair the drum and return the drum to me at no cost. RK Drums did an excellent job and definitely lived up to their life time guarantee. Buy an RK Drum and enjoy a wonderful craft roasted coffee just the way you like it.

Thanks Jeffrey for being a long-term loyal customer and thanks for the review! Maybe you can get another 1000LB of coffee out of that thing! Shane
Shane is awesome, some of the best customer service I have experienced! Very comforting when sinking some capital in a business startup. And the roaster itself is nothing short of amazing and easy to learn. I’m semi-reserved to highly recommend them, because it is almost like a trade secret. I think roasteries would pop up everywhere if people knew how easy it was. And these guys are there to guide you to make it easy. Do not have reservations about the quality of the roast! The coffee coming out of this RK drum is better than a lot of coffee roasteries using high dollar roasters!
Responsive, friendly, and cooperative customer support. I experienced a couple issues likely resulting from shipping, but in both cases, Shane saved the day. Anticipating many good roasts after exceeding my expectations on the first.
The product I purchased is just as described by RK Drums. It arrived with a defect, probably from shipping. Shane immediately sent a replacement. Couldn't ask for more.
Great experience! I received my roaster, the 12 lb, and my cooling system before I was expecting to. Got to do my burn-in over the weekend, and roasted two 2lb batches to get a feel for the setup and a 10lb batch in about an hour!
Great first impression!
Thank you, Shane, for getting my business ready to go to the next level.
From Kevin @ 307 Roastery.
Shane is amazing! He knowledgeable, helpful and patient! He’s truly an asset to the coffee business. Susan New Day Coffee Havelock NC
Shane is super responsive, and helpful; he’s willing to assist you anyway he can.
It was great. In fact, I will probably need another set up sometime in the next couple of years and will order from you again!

We have a big green egg, I was looking for a coffee Bean roaster setup. I asked the help message bubble person. They got me set up so I had a rotisserie piece that I would need to work with the coffee being roaster. The set up works fantastic and the customer service was unbelievable! So nice and so caring happy I found these lovely people to help me with my coffee roasting project.

Hi Amanda, I'm so glad you had a great experience with us and your roasts on your Egg are turning out well. Do let us know if you have any questions or problems. Thanks- Shane
This is the 2nd drum I have purchased from Shane. .. Superb!!! The last drum, a 12lb, roasted at least 10,000 pounds flawlessly before being upgraded to a Diedrich... I have no doubt this drum will do the same or more!!!
Response from the owner -
10,000 LB is incredible. That's 5 tons of coffee. Impressive. Let us know if you ever need anything. -Happy Roasting. Shane
Fantastic customer service. Best in the industry. Quality stainless, too. Would definitely recommend you purchase your roaster or cooling equipment through RK Drums.

If I had to find a negative it would be how loud the motor is. That would not change my decision to purchase. Happy customer.

Thanks for your very kind review and generous words. We're thrilled you had a great experience. We strive to make sure every customer gets helped as much as they need. Our brand was build by Ron Kyle with that standard. Looking forward to working with you again in the future. Shane
My experience reflects what many others have already said: great customer service and a great, solid product. Watching the videos was very helpful for the roaster assembly process and also for how to use the roaster. Shane also gave very helpful advice about roasting. I'm definitely pleased that I chose to purchase from RK Drums and wouldn't hesitate to do so again. No buyer's remorse here!

The videos and Shane's very prompt replies to my questions convinced me to order my roasting drum. The drum was finished in the expected time and Shane spent time to give an overview of the roasting process and answer any questions. The drum was very solid and very good quality. After ordering the drum, I had watched the assembly videos, so there were no surprises when it came to selecting the grill, modifying it and installing the drum, the motor and related brackets. I had previously only used a small stove-top roaster, so roasting with a much larger drum was initially intimidating. Fortunately, the videos for roasting have been very helpful while I'm still learning and improving my roasts. I'd definitely recommend purchasing a drum from RK Drums and wouldn't hesitate to order an additional drum from them.
Response from the owner -
Thanks Steve. It's amazing seeing that much coffee come off that drum in 20 minutes or less, isn't it. I'm glad you found the video series helpful. Keep on roastin' -Shane
Great customer service, quality product. I'm still new to roasting with this roaster, but there are videos on the website for me to learn from and a community of roasters to discuss with. I'm looking forward to using this roaster for many year.

We love our drum from RK drums. Top quality. Shane gives the most amazing customer service I have ever received from any company. He gave me step by step instructions via online chat and lots of resources for green coffee beans to roast. His videos that emails on how to start roasting are fantastic. Thank you

I'm sure your roasts are improving by the day now! Thanks for the review and talk to you soon! Shane
One of, if not the best experience of my life. Very helpful and quick responses. Their product works like a charm

I have been roasting on our Big Green Egg and needed to up our game. Purchased a 2# drum and Shane gave me pointers on drum RPM, learned I needed to increase our drum speed. Thanks Shane your drum and the speed advice made a huge difference!

I love my 12 lb. RK Drum! Not only has the coffee turned out great, but the experience of building your own roaster gives you such a sense of pride in your work. I only had one question, but Shane was available to help even though I ended up figuring it out on my own. You can tell he cares about his product and wants you to succeed. Well, after 30 minutes on the phone with him, going through EVERYTHING I would need to know to get a perfect batch out of my 3rd roast, I understood why he was busy. He’s awesome. He’s a professor when it comes to this stuff, and knows what it takes to make his product produce the best coffee for you that it can with your setup. Doesn’t push his equipment, tells you to build it yourself if you have the ability. But, I have to say, I looked into buying a motor, then a coupler, then the metal for a stand, then the time making the stand myself, and it was WAY easier and probably not much more expensive to just buy his setup. Can’t wait to roast my virgin roast soon, and now I know I have a support system available. Awesome. Just awesome!

Hello Shane, just wanted to update you. I came up with a different, and I hope better option, with respect to getting the base plate on the right side of the barbeque where the warmer burner was located. I will go over that, send you pictures and we can talk about it later. I did the 500 degree burn. Tomorrow I try and get to the tightening done. And, having read the roasting profiles on your website, I will probably do one or two roasting and see how the bean react. I did not dig thoroughly through the website, for a profile for decaf beans. My wife drinks decaf. And, I know from having the Behmor roaster for over 14 years, the decaf profile is quite different. The last comment is kind of minor, but I did dial in exactly five hundred degrees and marked the position of the burner dials. So, obviously, I will be really looking at the result of our first and second roasts. Thanks to you for all the help you have given me in changing my roasting equipment which will outlive me and possibly the person who inherits it from me after I pass! I will be in touch with you soon.
Sincerely,
Doug Ross

RK drums are fantastic! I've been roasting using a simple metal bowl and heat gun for about two years and finally decided to upgrade my coffee roasting apparatus to Shane's RK drum roasters after hearing so much about them in the /r/homeroasting subreddit. I ordered the 6 lb Everything Kit and completed the build in a day. I did the burn-in and my first roast of Brazilian Cafe Minas Paqueno from Sweet Maria's and man, was I blown away by the consistency of color, aroma, and flavor of coffee that this drum produced. Now, instead of only being able to produce about 3/4 lb of coffee per roast session, I can easily do 18+ lbs of coffee an hour. This is an excellent purchase if you are looking to up your roasting game and start selling coffee beyond just friends and family. If you are just starting out, I'd suggest getting a 2 lb everything kit and then get a bigger drum if you wanted to produce more.

Thanks Mike for the great review. It's truly been a joy roasting with you! - Shane RK
Nothing to complain about, I have only good things to say. Clearly, RK Drums is targeted more towards coffee roasting. I had trouble with roasting nuts, which RK Drums didn't have much experience with (so it could help if there were guides on roasting other foods, but perhaps there isn't a large enough market for it). RK Drums wasn't for me, but the customer service was just as good if not better...

RK Drums wasn't for me, but the customer service was just as good if not better than the best I've experienced. Shane spent time with me on the phone and we exchanged multiple emails to answer all of my questions, and help me solve problems I was having. The product itself is well built, durable, and easy to assemble with the detailed installation videos, which are very thorough and don't leave anything out.
I have nothing but great things to say about RK Drums. The durability and value of the products is outstanding, and the instructional videos are straightforward, informative, and detailed. We received our roaster in a very timely fashion and had the roaster assembled the same all the components arrived. That same night we did our first roast and it turned out awesome! Thanks RK Drums for putting out a quality product and providing some much support behind it! Happy roasting!

My old hand-built 2-pound roaster made from aluminum and stainless steel powered by the standard Weber rotisserie parts have been in use for about 5 years and was gradually wearing out. That motor is way too slow to get an even roast, so manual intervention and constant baby-sitting was required. My wife surprised me with a new 4 pound RK drum for Father's Day. Man, was I surprised at the quality of the materials and workmanship. The new drum required a lot more new parts, i.e., new motor, motor mount, 50" rod, panel-mount switch, panel mount IEC connector, NEMA power cord, plastic junction box intalled under grill, plastic-head thumb screws to remove the motor when not roasting, grill modifications to accommodate the new setup, etc. This became a rather expensive endeavor but man, was it ever worth it. I contacted Shane via the website's Chat function and he "picked up" immediately ON A WEEKEND and was very helpful. Overall, I believe you can roast many different ways, but for me, RK Drums was the best solution to maintain my expensive grill for dual purpose roasting and grilling. I'd give RK Drums 11 out of 10 stars.
Working with RK Drums and Shane was such a great experience. Shane was (and still is!) always available for both simple and complex questions. The product is great and specially designed to roast great coffee.
Excellent experience!! I’ve been roasting on a 4lb drum for 10 years now. I have had my 6# complete drum kit going for a couple of months now. I have roasted over a hundred pounds of delicious coffee and shared with family and friends. Now I'm figuring out how to jump through the hoops required to sell it at farmers markets and other venues. Thanks so much Shane-- great products, but even better support!
I have used Your product for over ten years now and have no complaints. Excellent customer services as well!

Awesome experience. It was a very easy process. Plenty of info available. I went from spending 10hrs a day on the weekend to fulfill orders to knocking it out in 20 min. The RK Drum is smooth, consistent amd easy to get a solid roast every time.
Good company, quality product
Excellent product! I highly recommend it for the home roaster or a small roasting company!
Y’all are awesome! I started my business a year ago and it’s gone smoothly because of y’all!
takes the time to understand the objective, improve on ideas, and build what is needed

Our experience was fantastic from start to finish. We needed two custom drums for our application RK Drums delivered quality drums quickly.
Shane was super helpful helping me pick out the right drum for me, assembling the roaster, and getting the process going. The drum is awesome, the roasted coffee is delicious, and I couldn't be happier. I recommend RK Drums if you love fresh coffee.
Everything is great.
The drum was very expensive but it is well made and easy to use.
All was good. Very responsive to questions etc
Great experience with RK. I called them up out of the blue from across the continent regarding installation challenges that I was having. They stayed on the phone until the problem was solved. Thank you RK Drums :)
Quality of products are top notch. Communication with support and ordering is amazing, all my questions got answered in a timely manner.
Extremely easy process start to finish! Communication was quick and easy. Fast delivery. I even messed up my order and needed to exchange a piece. That process was just as easy and I was up and runnin.
Very pleased! Very informative website and quick response when ordering
Overall I was very pleased with my experience. Product details were represented clearly and accurately on website. Quality craftsmanship of the roasting drum itself.

The product is dope: strong, reliable and user friendly. The customer service was awesome. Responses were quick and Shane was personally involved in my setup and ordering.
Product was very good quality, although I did have some trouble with installation, primarily due to my poor planning.
I felt from the beginning the company was very helpful. They where there to help decide which drum set was best for my family. Throughout the set up process they were available for questions and quick to response. I would purchase from RK Drums again.
fantastic product and fantastic support - Shane is always available and super helpful - Thanks!!
Have roasted for my small cafe for 5 years with the setup from RK Drums and it's been amazing. Customer service was understanding and shipped the correct parts when items eventually wore down. Thanks!
My experience with Shane & RK Drums has been fantastic I’ve been roasting on a 4 pounder now for over 5 years and the equipment- the drum, the motor & brackets have worked flawlessly I couldn’t be happier! I purchased the 8lb Everything Kit along with the Model T Advanced cooler after a few months of researching various smaller sized commercial roasters. The commercial roasters were simply out of my price range so I started to seriously consider the RK Drum roaster. I had absolutely no background in coffee roasting but knew that I wanted to roast coffee! After lots of reading and watching Shane's videos, I took the plunge. It was quickly shipped and before long I was assembling my roaster with no problems whatsoever. After locating some relatively inexpensive beans (they're out there, you just have to look) I started roasting. I've roasted twelve to fifteen batches so far and all have been great except for one that got away from me and caught fire. Just as Shane says, you've got to learn your particular grill and just start roasting. It's all coming together for me now and friends and family love the fresh coffee. I'm having a blast with this thing. I'm so glad I found RK Drums! If you're looking to roast coffee without breaking the bank RK Drums is the way to go. Thank you Shane and everyone that works behind the scenes at RK Drums! B Smith

Thanks Brian for some great feedback! Looks like you're getting the hang of it nicely! Keep on roastin'
I purchased an RK drum to try my hand at roasting back in 2014. In 2015 we started a small coffee roasting business. We have since updated our roaster to a true commercial roaster and roast over 500 pounds a day. We would not have been here without our first experience roasting with an RK Drum. Highly recommended for someone looking to get into roasting. www.canoecoffee.ca

Shane is super helpful. The customer service is top notch. This is a great way to roast beans for a fresh cup of coffee!
Good
It was great (but this was ages ago!).
Shane was very attentive to every detail in making a specialized unit for me to be used for a special product and project. Thank you for your efforts and I can warmly recommend you and your services to my friends and acquaintances. Jerrold Hyman

I ordered the 2lb drum 5 years ago and it has held up great with no problems. Would highly recommend for anyone interested in roasting their own coffee
First rate in every way.
It was excellent. Very responsive to email and able to deal well with the complexity of an international order
Fast response to all questions and orders. High quality coffee roasting equipment that works. Best value I have found today!
RK Drums did a great job helping with the selection of the drum for our needs. We ordered a seconds quality drum due to cost restraints and it performed perfectly. High quality craftsmanship and a great company to work with.
I've been using RK drums for longer than I can remember, and upgraded a few years ago to a new 8 lb drum. Both drums have been wonderful, and I've now managed to "hook" a number of people at our office on truly wonderful coffee. With one of these, a dedicated grill and the support of the RK Drums community, it's easy to experience outstanding coffee.
It got my coffee business going, so very pleased!
Product as advertised and has served me well after several years.
Excellent service and more importantly a very high quality roasting drum I've been using for 5 years without fail.

When I was new to coffee roasting I received via email correspondence some individual coaching on how to roast and utilize the roasting drum. I only drink coffee that I didn't roast as a very last resort under extenuating circumstances. This product and the company that produces it provide excellence that is getting more and more rare as time goes by!

Shane and RK Drums were wonderful to work with. I came to them with a custom project that was different from their typical work, and they not only were enthusiastic and capable, they helped me think everything through to make the project possible. Five years later, and I'm still using that roaster as the basis for my business. I highly recommend them to anyone!

Thanks Carol for the Review! Your project was super fun and one of our pride and joy pieces. Thrilled to hear it's still running well for you!
Wonderful roaster. Great service!
Beautifully crafted roasting drum. Excellent rotisserie motor. Helpful installation info. My RK Drums rig has been in constant use for many years. I can't speak highly enough of Shane's excellent work.

Fantastic way to roast coffee. I did1,861 roasts and never had to replace a single part. I roasted for the churches I attended. One went through 7 Gallons of coffee in 35 minutes. The RK drum was up to the challenge. Great artisan roasts
The drum was high quality
Best small drum to date!
About ready to start roasting. This far I have been very impressed with the quality of the components.

Nothing but the best of service and quality of product is #1 I have been using my roaster for a number of years now with much success
I have been roasting coffee using an RK Drum for over 6 years. In that time, it has performed flawlessly and is well constructed! Additionally, Shane has provided excellent support before and after the sale. I highly recommend RK Drums coffee roasting equipment.
I have had the drum and motor assembly for a number of years, using the system about once a month. Works great, although the allen screws on the drum are stripped out.
Response from the owner -
Hi John! Sorry you're having trouble with the screws.... Are you referring to the bearing screw? Let us know how we can help and thanks for the review!
Since we got our 5 kg. (12 lbs.) drum we have roasted over 1200 Kg (2600 lbs.) of cocoa beans with no problems.
Excellent product and help with setting up my roaster using drum sand parts.
Great experience and great product. Already recommended to my neighbor and he purchased a drum, too.
From someone thinking of getting into roasting to someone who has been roasting for years, RK Drums has you covered. They are extremely generous with their time when it comes to answering any questions you may have to get you on track.
I bought the large drum kit and cooling tower in 2015. They do the job pretty well, though I might wish for a better chaff removal solution.
I have always received excellent service and products from RK Drums.
Could not have been better, the help in getting things set up and understanding what equipment I would need was outstanding.

I really enjoyed speaking with Shane, and hearing his experiences, from his travels.
I have one roaster in Medford, Oregon, an 8# barrel. I have another 4# barrel in Itamambuca, Brazil.
Got Christmas presents for the family to shop for? Just find out how they make their coffee, and roast away your worries......
Everyone, and I mean everyone loves coffee! Even the Tea drinkers.... they secretly want to drink coffee.....

Shane and his team were and are fantastic — our business started on a 7 lb RK drum and we roasted on it for 2 years and had a great experience — I’m even thinking of bringing it back once I get into a better space for a special edition roast — again — Shane was amazing — always attentive — and always available.
Happy Roasting

The only thing I've had to modify is to add a support bracket to have to rotisserie spit rest on, rather than having all the weight rest on the shaft of the motor. There was no issue that prompted this modification, just my own desire to ensure the motor was exposed to as little stress as possible from the weight of the beans and drum.
Great product. My only drawback was the expense of getting it shipped to Alaska.
Works great still after 7 years. Just wondering if there's a way to clean the coffee oils / residue on the inside of the drum (2lb).
Response from the owner -
Hi Marilynn, thanks for the review. Most of us do not feel the need to clean the drum. I myself have roasted 15-16 years without doing any cleaning as 500F does a pretty good job of sanitizing. Some say that it seasons the drum and produces better coffee.
However, here is a method that Dan Largent came up with and posted to the RK Facebook forum. Check this out.
"Dan Largent: I have cleaned mine 3 times now. I found a plastic tote that fits down inside my old grill. I cut the top down on it and notched the sides so the drum sits down in it and operates as normal with the tub under it. I put a bag of popcorn (not microwave) in the drum and fill the tub with hot water and a little dawn detergent and let the drum run for 15 minutes or so. Then dump the soap water and replace with cold clean water and run it for a few minutes more. Repeat that until water no longer has any soap in it. Remove the tub, fire the grill up on low and heat it up a bit to dry it out being careful not to pop the popcorn. Empty popcorn and I am ready to roll. Popcorn scours out every nook and cranny inside the drum and everything comes out squeaky (literally) clean."
Hope that helps!
Good experience with your company and a well built product.

Super nice people. Personal service and advice for a newbie roaster.
I’ve had my drum more than a year and it’s held up very well. I usually roast a pound or so a week unless we are entertaining.
Roasts are as consistent as an outdoor grill allows.
Very satisfied customer.
Great experience. Shane was very helpful in answering all my questions, giving expert instructions and tips on roasting. It's been 4years since I purchased the RK drum kit and I'm loving it . This is, in my opinion, the ultimate way to roast and enjoy coffee to the fullest. Thank you Shane.
Quite possibly one of the best customer experiences I've had. Not surprising from an independently owned business. Shane spent so much time on the phone with me, not only to give me information about the product, but also tips about setting up the grill conversion and getting started on how to roast. I do need a new fan for my motor a couple years later, one of the fins broke off, but it still...

Quality product that came in a timely manner. Have roasted quite a bit of coffee and it has held together fine.
It’s been several years ago since we bought our drum and it is as rugged as they claim. The way the drum is designed we get a nice even roast every time. We have been roasting for over 6 years and have had no issues whatsoever. When starting, I called and talked to Shane a couple times and he was very helpful.
Shane was super helpful when I was exploring new coffee roasters. The 6 lb. roasting kit I purchased was very high quality and easy to assemble. This roaster went through 140 mph winds in my back yard during hurricane Harvey. Even the motor still works 2 years after the beating it took. The bbq pit I installed the equipment in is giving up, but not the RK drum and motor!
Customer service was prompt and answered all of my questions appropriately.

Drums seems sturdy and lasting. I would like to see a solid drum option for roasting over a campfire! Great product
Response from the owner -
Hi Geoffrey! Thanks for the review. We have had solid drums for many years. When selecting a drum, just choose "solid" as the material type! Thanks so much!
I have had my RK drum for almost 20 years. I bought mine from Ron before he passed away. It is as good as the day I bought it. It works really great and mine doesn't have the new fins which are supposed to help move the beans better. You really need to be very careful because the drum is very hot when you remove it from the grill. It isn't the easiest thing to use but I love it and am never...

We started using RK Drums when we started a commerical roastery. Over a two year period we had no trouble with our barbeque roaster. The support from RK Drum was excellent. I used the bin to roast peanuts. Excellent product. Easy to set up and easy to use
Fantastic service from Shane. Answered all my questions before and after purchase. Build and operation of drum roaster went very smoothly and I've been using the setup for several years now.
Great drum. Worked exactly as expected.
I love my RK drum. I've been roasting for about 3.5 years. The materials used for the drum are top notch and still look great with only minor cleaning. I've recommended it to others and will continue to do so!
Overall, my experience with RK Drums has been great. There are times where I’ve been intimidated by the DIY nature of it, but it has been easy enough to get once you’ve done it. The final product you can get from it is astronomically good. I’ve had people do taste comparisons against some pretty high caliber companies, and my roasts have won out. Shane was extremely helpful and encouraging in getting my roasting hobby started. He's not just a business owner, but also a passionate teacher.
Excellent budget option that produces consistent results. Shane always there to help!
Great team and product. Super helpful when I needed upgrade parts and got wonderful results for my coffee!
High quality drum; helpful when I called.
I've had multiple interactions with RK Drums and every one of them has been excellent. Whether it's a straight purchase or requesting advice, the RK Drums family has been the epitome of the customer friendly service provider. The only thing better than their customer service are their products. I have recommended RK Drums products to many people, colleagues and friends alike. You can't go wrong...

Excellent! The coffee drum works great.
I've own two RK drums - one custom sized, and one 12-lb, and have roasted over one ton of coffee with these setups. Before investing in RK, I purchased two drums on eBay which only lasted around 1 year each. In contrast, neither RK drum has needed replaced in the 2+ years of ownership despite my increased roasting volume. The only thing I'd like to see a better mount between the drum and grill to...

The only thing I'd like to see a better mount between the drum and grill to reduce the squeaky noise and improve rigidity.
Well made equipment, good customer service.
The Best!! Great info, great quality and great service! I need a new set up so will be contacting soon!
I use the 12 pound capacity RK drum and I coudn't be more satisfied ....as head chocolate maker for CocoaEthika I use it for both roasting coffee and cacao ...this is an excellent work of craftsmanship. THANK YOU BIG TIME!!!
Great equipment. ..
My experience was flawless , customer service was great and the product is amazing.
I'm very pleased with my setup. I'm on my third year with no issues.
Good response and no problem with having custom modifications to the drum as I requested. Prompt and efficient service
When someone is willing to talk to you on the phone for over an hour, talk about all aspects of the business, not oversell if you do not need it and is always available to help trouble shoot...it doesn't get better than that. Highly recommend.
Love the product and my customers love the coffee. We will be buying more.
Rk Drums are built First and foremost with quality. they are built like a tank ,can take the heat and no leaking of coffee beans. I am very satisfied with the work RK Drums into there products Don tyler Nickname Coco of Coco's Coffee East kingston NH
RK drums have a well built, quality product!
Drums are durable and reliable! The short 2 lb. Drum is awesome if you buy two...you can roast separate origins simultaneously!
Very well made product. Year three and thousands of kilos . Great customer service. Highly recommended.
Excellent product, we got drum for over a year and use it to roast coffee all the time. Out coffee tastes great and saves a lot of money.
I absolutely love the product and the customer service is amazing. Shane was very friendly and helpful in getting my drum setup.
Excellent product. Follow the installation instructions. You are now ready to roast the the best tasting coffee of your life. All my customers raved about it.
RK drums has made high quality coffee roasting at high quantity available to the average person at lie cost.
Highest quality workmanship. I've had my 4lb drum for just over 10 years so far and I love it. I bough an entire kit to fit my grill from RK drums. After 6 years my first rotisserie motor died and I bought a replacement, and was happily surprised to find out the new motor also came with a fan to prevent the overheating that burned out my first motor. Great company! Great products! High quality materials? Built to last. I've used an RK Drum for years with great success and satisfaction. Highly recommended!
Very good. Everything we needed
My RK drum is making great coffee. I'm hoping my grill dies soon so I can get a bigger grill, so I can get a bigger RK Drum!
I have been very happy with my 4lb drum! It has roasted hundreds of pounds of coffee and still is in like new condition! Shane is very good to work with and will answer any questions you have!
Couldn't be happier
The product works and is well designed. It would be nice to have a matching funnel designed for the drum.
This is my second drum and first RK. It’s excellent. Can’t think if a single thing I’d tweak on it after dozens of uses. Highly recommended.
I have been roasting with RK Drums for a number of years with very good and consistent results....
Ordering was simple and easy thanks to the amount of information available. Shipping was efficient and the boxing was manageable. The installation instructions and schematics were top notch. Our drum is well constructed and has been a workhorse.
Good stuff
Not only is the product intuitively simple to it put together and understand but the companies dedication to helping guide their customers through each step is actually inspiring! I have had some really challenging hoops to jump through related to how to roast on a larger scale and when I went to RK drums for my questions the owner himself spent the next half hour walking me through what to do....

Anyways I would recommend this product to anyone. By the way it makes outstanding coffee!!
Very happy with quality of the roaster and my experience ordering the product.
My experience purchasing was perfect. When I received the product I was ecstatic. Super heavy duty. I could not have built my roaster without RK.
Several years later with many hundreds of roasts completed successfully and the products I purchased from RK are in perfect condition.
Great well made drums. Excellent customer service. Needed a minor latch upgrade for my drum. Parts where sent quickly with included instructions for mounting new hardware.
Love the consentience roasts these drums do to coax those hidden flavours each type of bean has
Excellent quality and workmanship. And this is coming from a former machinist and quality control manager. My RK 6 lb Drum works great with my dedicated gas grill, its the closest thing you can get to a $20,000 3 kilo roaster!
Easy use. Drawback is wind interference.
My biggest fear is that your business is unsustainable given that there is no obsolescence built into your amazing product. This is the best thing to ever happen to home coffee roasting.
Can't more highly recommend RK Drums! Their expertise, professionalism, and high caliber craftsmanship is unparalleled, matched only by their genuine love of roasting coffee. Customer service could not be any better--order, delivery, set-up, mods, tips and tutorials were all a cinch. Very good and thoughtful. Some confusion at first with the order, but when I notified RK about it, it was rectified quickly. Drum is working great, better than using a small 8 oz electric roasting oven.

excellent customer service. I had questions and you had answers or were willing to try to figure it out with me.
The product and service has been great. I've got the little 2lb drum and its perfect for what I use it for. There's arguably easier ways to roast, but this was the lowest cost to entry I could find to roast larger quantities than an old popcorn popper or whirley pop. Plus its a great talking point when you tell people you roast your coffee on a grill!
I'm extremely pleased with my RK Drums setup. I can roast excellent coffee at a fraction of the cost of buying a traditional roaster. Thanks so much also for the assistance in setting everything up. The personal support was needed and much appreciated.
Very very well . the customer service is outstanding the product you could not ask for anything better well-built
I’m on my second drum and love it. I started with a small 2lb drum but after 2 years needed a bit larger capacity. I upgraded to a 6lb drum. I went right back to RK drums knowing the product would be solid and supported.
Everything was exactly as ordered, and delivery was fast.
Great experience! Shane was fantastic to work with, having fielded several calls from my business partner and I on what size drum to purchase for our needs. Ended up getting the 14lbs drum...fast delivery and we were very pleased with our purchase. Definitely recommend RK Drums!

Thanks for the review Lisa!
I think a few refinements are need. First the wood handle on the routisserie rod is not only ugly but crudely made. I turned a new handle on my lathe out of walnut. The latch on the drum is hard to open open or close and the rotisserie rod isn’t straight. Other than that it works well.
Response from the owner -
Thanks David for the feedback!. We'll work to refine these items some. Do note that the latch is hard for a time, as the heat and use will loosen it up. If I sent it to you loose now, it could fall open in time and dump coffee. Thanks for working with us and let us know if you have any trouble.
Purchased a 2lb for my Big Green Egg -- works very well with a Joetissery w/ motor upgrade. I kind of wish I purchased the 4lb instead for larger roasts. The 2lb performs great, however.
My RK 5lb Drum is a true work horse! Shane and I have had many discussions over the phone. When I first bought my RK drum it was to replace one I had purchased from another company. In fact it was the second one I had purchased. Shane told me I can expect my RK drum to last a very long time. I'm certain the only other drum I'll be purchasing from RK will be a larger one! My company, Berries To Beans Coffee Compny, has many very satisfied customers. I would put my RK drum roasted coffee against ANY other coffee. If you are just wanting to home roast for friends or family or take it to the next level you won't be disappointed with your set up from RK Drums. I have contemplated investing in a commercial roaster many times over the years and have yet to justify such an expensive purchase when I am able to roast so well with my RK drum.
Response from the owner -
Thanks for a great review! That really is the truth, I'm personally in the same boat. Been roasting on the RK for 15 and 16 years now on 2 machines, and I can produce 30LB an hour on my 4 and 6 combined. It's just too hard to justify the price of the commercial machine when it just roasts so well. Thanks and Roast on!
I started home roasting a few years ago with a small air roaster. That worked will but the roasts tended to be a bit inconsistent. I bought a 2 lb drum from RK that I use on my home propane grill. It took a bit of time to get used to not seeing the roast but once I found the right temperature to get the roast time dialed in, I find that my roasts are a LOT more consistent. The drum is built like a tank and will likely outlast me.

Great

My one criticism is about the heat baffle on the back of the grill hood - in warm Georgia weather, at dead low bbq temp, I cannot keep roast temperatures low enough for beans that require slower roasting, My bad that I've been too lazy to remove the baffle.
BTW - I hate paypal, which has resulted in my not ordering replacement bushings for the motor-spit connection. The original is still doing very well indeed.
Response from the owner -
Hi Fred! The back grill baffle is indeed a tradeoff between the higher efficiency and heat retention, and having a hard time keeping the temperature down for small roast volumes. If you're doing more small roasts, it's probably best if you take that out.
By the way, we also have Stripe for payment processing if you prefer not to use Paypal. I'll touch base with you and get those bushings to you.

Very easy

I have been roasting with a 6 lbs. drum for over a year with great results. I mostly roast anywhere from 2 - 4 lbs., but I also roast as little as 1 and as much as 6. I am using a rotisserie grill purchased from Sam's Club. Overall I am very pleased with the drum from RK Drums.
I have been roasting every week with a 6 lbs. RK drum for more than a year with great results. I mostly roast anywhere from 2 - 4 lbs. at a time, but I also roast as little as 1 and as much as 6. I am using a five-burner rotisserie grill purchased from Sam's Club. Overall I am very pleased with the drum from RK Drums.
Great equipment at reasonable price. My business has been using my 6lb RK roaster for over 2 years without fail-- Very dependable.
Shane at RK drums was excellent at advising me on the right drum, and answering my questions as I set up the drum (e.g. which type of grill to buy). I've used my 8" drum for about a year now for both coffee beans (great instructions on RK website) and cacao beans (about 350deg for 16 min). Both are extremely easy to do and I highly recommend RK Drums.
Shane helped us develop our roasting business from a to z. It's been 10 years now; we roasted 2800 lbs last year. Shane is the best for all things coffee.
I'm very happy with my 15 Pound s/s drum from RK DRUMS, thank you Shane!!!
Great Experience. Bought the complete roasting set up and it is very well made use it frequently. As well it takes a bit of practice and insight initially to roast correctly and Shane was hugely helpful. He spent quite a lot of time on the phone with me troubleshooting and helping me get set up.
Great products, great service, and very informative site. I am roasting Turkish Coffee.
I originally bought my 4 lb. roast drum from Ron Kyle. It was so well made, I sent him an email telling him he should put “Made in USA” on the drum. You could tell from the website and his replies to questions that he was very passionate about this hobby/business, and would do anything to help you. I roast strictly for home use. I’m sure Ron would be proud of Shane and others at RK who continue to provide the best customer service around. You won’t find a better made roasting drum.
Service and Q & A response time was very fast and helpful.
Super, our RK drum roasts coffee that exceeds even the best coffee houses here in our town. There is something to be said about roasting in small batches by contrast to our local roaster who begins at 300lbs. Our experience with RK drums has been excellent so far. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next " innovations" that will help us with the quality and ease of use.
First I bought the 8 lb drum kit and then later, the Model T cooler. I've been very satisfied with them both. I called Shane a couple of times to get some help and advice. He always takes the time to answer any questions I may have. These products are very well made. You won't find this kind of quality anywhere else.

Thanks Roger for reviewing us! Glad to have you as a customer! Let us know if you need anything! Happy Roasting

Customer service is fantastic. Good quality Drum. I highly recommend it. The results are amazing, and it's fun roasting on the rk drum.
Customer support has been awesome, and I love the amount of videos and support that are posted on the website.
Excellent! The communication and service has been great. The roaster itself is very high quality.
Excellent product, excellent instructions and excellent customer and delivery service.
I received my order very quickly, 2lb drum. Very happy with the workmanship of the product. Also very happy with it's roasting ability. I use this drum on a charcoal grill, using wood instead of charcoal. No odd flavors at all, very pleased with the flavors it can produce. Thank you for such a fine product.
We always get great service from RK Drums, a great transaction no problems. A great company to deal with.
Good customer service and quality product.
Had a great experience. Quality drum and have used now for over ten years with no issues. Can't get any better than that!!
RK Drums is a product that will last a lifetime! Been using for 10 years! Quick to respond with questions about products. Always available for advice. AAA+++ Service and Quality!

Amazing products. Bought my 4lb drum and motor back in 2006. Still going strong and roasting incredible coffee. Customer service is fast and very personal. Replacement parts are shipping immediately with only a 3-4 delivery time to Canada.
Very helpful in getting set up

RK drums makes an excellent product! It is simple, durable, and with some experience-roasts great coffee! I have personally recommended this roaster to three other people who have become avid RK drum roasters as well.

The transaction was seamless. They told me what I would need and sent everything. I have been roasting coffee with the RK Drum since 2010. The drum has worked perfectly. The transaction was seamless. They told me what I would need and sent everything.
I have been roasting coffee with the RK Drum since 2010. The drum has worked perfectly. A nice patina has developed on the stainless steel as a result of the smoke generated during the roasting.
I am a happy customer and would recommend the RK Drum to anyone who is interested in roasting their own coffee. You will never have to purchase another as they are built to last forever.
I have one of the original RK Drums--holds and roasts 4 lbs easily. I have been using this for over 15 years and it still works great.
I’ve been roasting with an RK drum (#19) for more than 17 years and have upgraded my setup over time with RK Drum’s help. Great people to deal with. Only way I’d consider roasting!
Great orders come quickly and are exactly what ordered.
I love the steel drum and motor that I bought from you. This is by far the best way to home roast coffee. I usually roast 2.5 lb at a time in my 4lb drum. I have a Weber grill and RK Drums modified my drum hub to use the thicker 3/8" rotisserie rod that comes with the grill. I minutes the motor in a wood platform with a switch to turn it off and on. Works great!

Glad to hear it's still going well! Keep it roasting!
Very good product. My 8# drum averages 200-300 roast cycles per year with minimal problems except an occasional scorched bean that may get trapped in a crevice in the drum. Rock solid performance for over 5 years of service.

(Ron Kyle would be VERY proud of him)! Shane once took time out of a church group ALASKAN trek to spend a good 15-20 minutes phone call with me when I was a "newbie" having difficulty. By the end of a phone call I was a lot more confident and proficient. He also made a follow-up call after he returned home to make sure I was cool. Of course that was many years ago...NOW I can roast with my eyes closed. Sold my 8#'er after shoulder challenges, but am still "printing $ with my 6#'er. I was able to set up a young man studying to become a physical therapist with a nice little cottage business to help defray college costs! Thanks again Shane for everything!
Quality construction - been using my RK Drum 9yrs without issue. Everything you need to build your own custom grill roaster. They've been around a while, seen everything, and have whatever you need to get you started and keep you running.
Response from the owner -
Thanks for your continuous support Paul. Let us know if you need anything.
Wonderful drum for roasting coffee. Been using it pretty steady for close to a decade. I was really pleased with its heavy duty materials, strong latch and durability.
Ordering the 4 pound roaster was easy, it came promptly, almost 10 years ago now, and I have roasted 947 batches of coffee successfully.
Response from the owner -
947 batches? Unreal... 947 batches X 4LB per batch is 3,788 pounds of coffee. That's 1.9 tons of coffee through a 4LB drum... You know we have bigger drums!?
I originally was looking to roast in my wood fired oven. Shane spent lots of time with me but in the end I went with the 5lb max drum and converted my gas grill into my permanent coffee roaster! I have had this in operation since January 2014. Highly recommend RK Drums !! Best coffee is your own!! Cheers
Experience was great
I've been using my 6lb. RK Drum setup for over 8 years and it has never failed us. High quality construction and quick responses from customer service were the highlights of a great product. Thanks!

Hi Jeremy, Thanks for the review! It's so great to hear that you're still enjoying your RK Drum!
Product was good and functional given what it was and the limitations of roasting coffee in a gas grill. As a company, the product was shipped and received in good condition; and worked as expected.
Response from the owner -
Thanks Patrick for the review! I'd love to hear more about the limitations you're experiencing as, typically we find no limitations. It might be that I can give you some techniques so that you might improve your experience? Do let us know, I'm sure we can help!
Great buying experience.
Great service. Coffee drums work great!

Quality service. Quality product
I’ve owned m RK Drum for I don’t know how many years. Have always had a great experience with RK!
I have run the gamut when it comes to roasting coffee beans, from an air popcorn, to an 8 ounce roaster. Finally I decided I needed something to roast a larger batch. I happened upon RK Drums from a Google search. I researched their claims and read everything on their site. I bought the 6 lb drum several years ago, along with the BBQ attachments. I happened upon RK Drums from a Google search. I researched their claims and read everything on their site. I bought the 6 lb drum several years ago, along with the BBQ attachments. I then found a BBQ, assembled the whole thing, and have been a happy roaster ever since. As for their products, I find them exceptional. I've completed over 130 roasts and there is no sign of wear on any of the components. Very satisfied with my decision and would recommend RK Drums for anyone interested in roasting at this level.

Thanks Bob for the comments! Roast on sir...
I can't say enough good things about Shane and RK Drums. Shane spent over an hour with me talking though the roasting process and how I can improve my roast quality. I bounced different ideas and scenarios off him. He was more than willing to help me through my recent struggles. I’ve had my drum for many years. It’s a great product.
Response from the owner -
Glad to hear things are running well John! My two machines are like 15 and 16 years old now! All original. Shane-RK
I just received my 6lb drum and all the goods this week, and did my first roast today. I love this roaster and I'm so glad I went with this option. Shane gives top notch support and is very invested in making sure his customers are not left feeling like they're alone. Fantastic communication with prompt follow-up. This will be the place that I will do future business with, Thanks Shane!
Customer service is more than outstanding. I've had my drum for 3 1/2 years. Shane is still answering my texts and questions whenever something comes up. RK Drums gets my highest recommendation!
I've had my roaster for four months now. I bought the motor and 4lb. drum and installed them into my barbecue grill. The roasting process is quite simple and the results are perfect every time. There was a learning process for using the grill and getting the roast where I wanted it, however the drum and motor are perfect. Every roast is even throughout!!

Dear Folks, I check in once in a while, and thought I would give you an update. I bought a RK roasting drum, I think in 2007. Dear Folks,
I check in once in a while, and thought I would give you an update. I bought a RK roasting drum, I think in 2007. It had a #7 hand etched into the side, so I always assumed that it was the seventh one sold. It sits outside all year here in Wyoming, sometimes covered with ice and snow, and has never had any kind of issue. It produces the best roasted coffee ever, and after 11 years I am happy as ever. In a world with so much planned obsolesce, I love having something that is “built to last”. I feel as though I should buy a new one just to support your company. Thank You!

This setup on my wood fired pellet grill is cranking out great coffee. A fantastic balance of fruity and chocolate notes without bitterness. Good and bad is that people can’t get enough (did another 30lbs in…

Good and bad is that people can’t get enough (did another 30lbs in 12 2.5lb batches last night).
So I need to increase drum size and capacity but don’t think I can fit the 24″ in the current setup that I’ve gotten running well. Can you build a 10″ x 18″ for me so I can maximize the space and minimize my fuel cost per lb?
Let me know if a 10″ x 18″ is possible. Great drum. Seriously makes incredible coffee. Thanks!!

Thx for making this a pleasurable AND affordable experience!! Everything arrived really fast, I could not be happier! I installed it, and it all went very well! First Roast was put through last night! 1lb green, Sweet Santa Espresso blend.
BBQ (used), 48000btu, 4 burner grill using the 6lbs RK Drum.
Started the system up, brought grill to a temp of 470 before removing and loading the drum with the green coffee. Getting to 470 was easy, the four burners were on, and at their lowest possible setting. The first few minutes were uneventful, as it should be. The climb back up to 470 was pretty quick like 60 sec. Barely lost any heat.. Between three to six minutes, the heat was starting to want to jump up towards 500, that made me a bit nervous, so I would quickly open the lid up and down to lower the temp back down.
I kept doing this up until I noticed that first crack was probably going to be a bit late. So at about 7min, I kept the lid down, and let the internal temp rise up on its own to try and make 1st crack in time, and boy things started quick after that. Too quick for my skill level lol. At 8:30 first crack was well on its way, and at that point i started lifting the lid of the bbq again to reduce the heat as she just wanted to keep climbing. I was really having a tough time telling when 1st crack ended, and 2nd crack started. I think a lot of this may have happened too fast due to the heat… That being said, I did take notes while roasting, and jotted down (1st crack done at 9:40) I was trying really hard to listen, and did hear what sounded like 2nd crack rolling along (didn’t jot that time down), so I pulled the roast at that point. I’ll try to send a pic.. I estimated I pulled the roast out at about 11min. In my excitement I forgot to jot down when I actually ended the roast..
The only thing that concerned me, and should be no surprise, is the scent coming off the beans once cooled is in my opinion, more bbq/smokey scent rather than that normal fresh coffee roasted scent.. I guess that is quite normal in an older used bbq, but should I continue using it, or bite the bullet and buy a new grill? Does that scent go away eventually? You must get these questions all the time, I’m so sorry. lol
I don’t want to keep roasting on that grill if it will affect the flavour or quality of the roast. I did do my best to clean it well, vacuumed all the crap in it, and replaced the diffusers etc. Overall, I am very pleased with how the coffee “looks”, and I’ll taste test it today to see!
Thanks again for all your support thus far, it’s been simply amazing! Could not be more happy with RK drums!!!

Been enjoying your products for over 2 years now. Glad to see you are now on Facebook!
I have been using one of the 8lb drums for over 5 years. Well built high quality drums that roast a mean bean. I only roast for family and friends but I roast almost every week and it is a breeze and takes less than 30 minutes to roast the perfect bean for the perfect cup. And damn does the house smell good as the bead degas. I have recommended and will continue to recommend RK Drums.

Every once in a while, the blind hog finds an acorn. Such was the case when Ron Kyle offered one of his RK Drums as a "Tradition" gift on the Sweet Maria's Homeroast mailing list. The Traditions are one-string-attached gifts where the giver offers some item(s) free including free delivery. Usually there is random choice involved in selection of the recipient. The only "string" is that the recipient is obligated to offer a Tradition of his own.
In Ron Kyle's tradition, he offered one of his custom-made RK Drums for coffee roasting. I WON! All I had to do was add my own gas grill and rotisserie. Ron sold these drums for $210 through his website.
First roast with my RK Drum was 16oz of Rwanda Masaka "Seven Lakes" from Sweet Maria's. I really like this coffee and had bought a second 5# bag of it. I probably should have used my Uganda Bugisu '03, since I've still got about 10# of it, but I just roasted some Friday. I had trouble keeping control of the temperature. Even though the New Braunfels thermometer showed that I was running about 25-40 degrees over target, first and second cracks were at the late end of the target windows. The final roast was an unintentional melange. (I'm going to add the 57 RPM motor) I chewed on a bean and it was yummy! I let the coffee rest until morning; after all, it was late afternoon and that's caffeinated stuff.
My Charbroil experience getting there were not good, though. I bought the $99 Charbroil from Lowe's and the Charbroil "universal rotisserie" I found there. I had a few problems initially...
First, the big one: I really regret buying the $20 Charbroil universal rotisserie. It wasn't worth that price. The motor had trouble turning my RK Drum, hesitating at a repeating part of the rotation. The Charbroil motor did not fit the Charbroil grill well, with the electrical cord and the on-off switch interfering with the grill's shelf. Further, the rod is two pieces that screw together. It broke easily when I tried to straighten it. The rod appears to be cast metal that is threaded on one end. Then, I tried to find a 5/16" rod to replace it. Not an easy thing to do on a holiday weekend. The only hardware store that told me they had 5/16" square rod in 36" size was wrong -- they had 36" round, but only 12" in square. Neither Lowe's nor Home Depot had any either.
THE FIX: I had to go back to Lowe's for some more painting caulk (for an unrelated project), so I checked out their other rotisserie items. Sure enough, there was also a $32 Charbroil universal rotisserie called the "Premium Electric Rotisserie". This had a one-piece rotisserie spit rod instead of the two-piece. The motor was labelled "heavy duty" and was bigger, heavier, and with the cord and switch were well-placed. There was also a wooden handle for the spit rod. All the Lowes' boxes were in bad shape and I decided not to buy one. I went by Home Depot on my way home, and bought the same unit there at a competitive price.
Second, a minor problem -- I had to bend the ends of the grill's flame shield ("vaporizer bar") upwards so that the center would be lower. This was so that the drum wouldn't touch the flame shield. Slight bends with a 10# hammer solved this issue.
Third, another minor problem with my Charbroil setup: temperature control was horrible. Perhaps that's a function of where I placed my thermometer, which was 1" below the CharBroil logo in the front of the cover. This puts it close to the exit for all heated air from the grill. As a test, though, I pulled out my digital thermocouple that I used with my Hottop. I ran it through a hole in the side of the grill's hood and found it read anywhere from 35-50 degrees higher than the New Braunfels thermometer. Not what I expected, since the indicated roasting temperature was already well above the targets -- and I had trouble or couldn't get low enough for the target temps. That, and the fact that my 1st and 2nd cracks were towards the end of the acceptable time ranges, made me think that the thermometer was reading way high. Hummm...
Finally, another problem with the $99 CharBroil -- ignition. This has the only burner I've ever seen which has the gas holes on the top of the side seam. Couple this with the standard boxy igniter, screwed to the top of the burner so the box hangs BELOW the gas holes. Since the purpose of the box is to capture some gas to ignite, the lighting is awfully difficult. It's easier to light it with a butane starter.
Roasting was the fun part. I could watch the temps rise up, fall, twiddle the gas valves for more or less gas, and listen, listen, listen. When it was finished, I dumped the beans into a metal mesh colander on top of a 10" box fan and stirred the beans and chaff. Note: I didn't want a 10" box fan, I wanted a 20" but that's hard to find in September. I finally found one and bought it, because the 10" didn't push enough air.
If I was starting over, I would: 1) buy the Brinkman grill at $200 or the Charbroil "commercial" at $300 from Lowe's 2) buy the "premium" rotisserie, or at least buy one that had a full-size spit rod 3) get a high-rpm motor BEFORE the first roast. 4) find a 20" box fan and not settle for a smaller size.
I'm now using my digital thermometer with thermocouple in addition to the large analog thermometer. This gives me a quick-response indicator of temperature changes, while the analog one responds more slowly. After a few roasts where I just stuck the thermocouple about 4 inches into the grill body through one of the 1/4" holes in the side of the top, I pulled out my 1/4" copper tubing and tubing cutter. By running the thermocouple casino online through the copper tubing, I have a way to place the thermocouple's bead (the actual sensing mechanism) where I want it. If you zoom the pictures above, you can see the copper tubing entering the grill lid from the left side.
(If you can't zoom the pictures, then try Firefox or Opera . I think you'll like them more than Internet Explorer. OK, OK, I decided to have mercy on the I.E. users! I made the pictures into links that will open larger versions of the same pictures)
It looks like my Hottop coffee roaster is going into retirement. I guess I will hold onto it for a while. I'll probably sell the Hottop in a couple months.
Roasting with the RK Drum is fun!
The more I use my RK Drum & gas grill, the more control I am getting over my roasts. I've managed to reduce the roast times to Ron's suggested time range by increasing the gas significantly during the first few minutes of the roast. I'm not sure this is the right approach, as Ron Kyle tells me that early application of too much heat is a good way to get a melange roast. That's what I got with 9oz of Sweet Maria's Donkey Blend this yesterday. I carried this well into second crack and got a blend of Vienna roast and Full City . I expect it to be very good.
Ron has made a design change to the internals since I got my drum. He notes that it enables the user to get a more consistent roast at the normal rotisserie speed of 6 RPM. Many folks have upgraded to 57 RPM gear motors to run their rotisserie for coffee roasting. Ron also sold a pre-built 57 RPM motor assembly for the RK Drum at his site.
I've gotten my motor, some aluminum angle bar (1.5"x1.5"x1/8"x4'), mounting screws for the motor, a switch, a mounting box for the switch, strain-relief plugs for the box, the clamps to clamp the assembly to the grill, and power wiring to go to the extension cord. Tomorrow, I hope to put this together into a motor assembly (hope, hope...). The Dremel and electric drill (both battery powered) are charged and ready to go.
[a day passes]
I assembled the base plate for my motor assembly, but it's not pretty. The angle iron was the key to putting it together.
First, I cut a piece of the aluminum tread sheet, about 12" x 6". This would be the vertical support for the gear motor. I used a mallet and a vise to bend this to a right angle.
The next step was to cut the vertical slots for mounting the motor. To do this, I started by drilling the corners of the slots and then enlarged them using a saw bit. Boy, was this the hard way to do something, especially with the hardened aluminum sheet.
I cut a 18" length of the 1.5"x1.5" aluminum "angle iron." This would be the visible edge of the motor assembly as well as supporting both the base and the vertical sections. I glued the bent faceplate to the angle piece using "JB Weld" hot temperature epoxy. Then I cut another piece of the aluminum treaded sheet at about 18" by 6" to be the visible base plate, and glued that to the previous assembly.
Mounting the gear motor was no biggie. I bought some brass machine screws at my local hardware store for the mounting holes and used split washers to make sure they held.
I used a small plastic project box , a mini toggle switch, a strain-relief plug (package of assorted sizes, and insulated male/female quick connectors from Radio Shack and a length of extension cord to provide power to the motor.
I gave up on the concept of using clamps to hold the motor in place on the grill. My more simple solution was to (1) cut two short dowels, (2) drill through them, (3) insert some metal loops from an old swag lamp's chain into the dowels to use as "stops", (4) and drill two matching holes through the base plate and the grill shelf. Now, I just set the motor on the grill shelf, line up the holes, push in the dowel plugs, hook up the power, start the grill and go...
Roasting with an RK Drum, part 5
Digital Thermometer & Thermocouple
Temperature control is one of the important features of using a gas grill-based roaster, as it is for any type of roaster.
The gas grill, though, is especially susceptable to temperature variations because of wind. The large exposed shell can also cause you to have significant temperature differences, season to season, for any selected gas flow.
If you're roasting your own coffee, you are likely to be using "the good stuff," too -- not cheap green coffee but green coffee that costs significantly more per pound than the standard coffee brands.
I use two thermometers when I roast. I have a large New Braunfels Smoker analog dial thermometer mounted in the front of the grill (see my RK Drum #1 page ).
I also use a digital thermometer with thermocouple to be able to monitor the temperature changes more quickly.
You can find the digital thermometer/thermocouple set at Sweet Maria's Home Coffee Roasting Supplies on their Home Roasting Accessories page.
In this first picture, you can see the left side of my grill, with the digital thermometer standing in a small wooden block (I used a dado blade to cut an angle slot in a piece of 2x4 for a stand). The thermocouple wire snakes around to the 1/4" brass tubing compression coupling.
I had this coupling fitting on hand. It makes a nice "stop" so that the wire can go through the copper tubing and the tubing won't fall into the roaster (see my RK Drum #1 page for the original -- which was a long piece of tubing stuck through the side).
The next picture shows the inside of the drum. Notice that the copper tubing simply sticks through the side of the grill. The compression fitting keeps it from falling in. The tubing is free to swivel with gravity.
The tubing is bent into an elongaged S shape. When the grill is closed, the end of the thermocouple is horizontal, level with the rotisserie shaft and about one inch to the front of the shaft.
The last picture is a closeup of the thermocouple mounting assembly (isn't that a nice word for this?). You can see the thermocouple wire sticking into the brass fitting and the thermocouple bead sticking out the end.
You might wonder why the thermocouple wiring is so dark — black and brown.
This is the same thermocouple that I was using in my Hottop coffee roaster .
TO whom gives a damn:
Great drum! did a first of many successful roasts. what a knock-out!!! many thanks and if we ever get around to hooking up to the bike, will send pics. (for your records for other Can. possible clients Total cost ~ $ 520.00)

Shane,
Got the drum up and running on the weekend here. Eased into it with a 1.5kg (3.3 lbs) roast of Peru Ceja de Selva followed by 1.8kg (4lbs) of Bolivian Green Mountain. Very happy with the results of the first 2. A very short pictorial review of the first roast can be seen in: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1323495861/
Brett.
I've roasted about 300 pounds in my RK. I enjoy roasting the larger batches. I prefer 2 1/2 pound batches. When you start roasting with an RK you will find that a five pound bag of greens doesn't last very long. I really enjoy being able to roast coffee for my family and friends, with out having to spend hours of my time to do it.
Shane, I have to say a big Thank You! I love the drum so far. It's well built, easy to use and with the help of this drum, I was able to roast 15lbs of beans tonight that I need for a farmer's market this weekend. What a great timesaver! Thanks my man for carrying on Ron's legendary work!

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!!! I'M IMPRESSED!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH...AMAZING FIT WITH STEM INTO BASE...SMOOTH AS BUTTER WITH A LITTLE CRISCO!! JUST WHAT I WANTED!! YOUR WELDER IS A MASTER!!
THANK YOU,
ETHAN WELLS.
The first roast. Evenly done, nice color, they smelled AMAZING!!
Shane,
I completed my maiden roast voyage on my new 6 pound drum. I did the metal mods and I am thrilled to say I hit first and second crack at the exact times on profile you posted. My Brazilian coffee looks lovely. I can tell you I feel like this is a great investment! Thank you for all the support. I'm excited.
Hi Shane!! The Drum is AWESOME.......this is my second RK drum....... I have already struck fear into my friends, who last saw me with a 4# RK drum, which now lives with my Chef friend in Tahoe. -Thanks Clay
Hi Shane,
I received the cooler today. I also did a 1lb test roast to make sure everything was working. Took 15 minutes for onset of second crack and which point I stopped it. Slightly lighter then I expected but I’m learning how the system performs. This is so much easier and faster then using my stove top whirly-popcorn pot.
Thanks, Cary
Just wanted to let you know I got my Roaster all setup now on the grill and did my first batch. It was amazing experience !! You have another happy customer!
Mike
Yay! The roaster is HEAVY DUTY! Nice! Just got my grill and motor, I should be able to roast this weekend! I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂 Dan Hankle Fernwood Finca LLC
You are absolutely correct on the difference with the latch! We have done about 50 roasts now with the latch and it is awesome. If any RK Drum user is still using the chain they are CRAZY and don’t know what they are missing. I wish I would have gotten it a long time ago. We are still considering the larger drum and you will be the first to know when we are ready.
Thanks,
Steve L.
Shane, Got the new clip, and pop riveted it on. Must have taken me all of 2 minutes! Just completed roasting 20 pounds of various beans, and I LOVE the new clip!!!! No more fiddling around with the pin, just pop it out, flip the clip, dump the beans, and on to the next batch. As you mentioned in your review, a bit less noise, and much faster turnaround times between roasts. Still regret not going…

Hi Shane,
The cooler works fantastic – a really nice tool! And what a great Father’s day gift for “el tostador tonto”. Bean cooling is fast (very) and chaff removal is effective – and easy, quick clean up with vacuum cleaner. And, no chaff flying all over – no more chaff landing everywhere in my roasting area.
best wishes,
David
Just finished roasting a 9 lb batch of Nicaragua Dipilto… It was flawless!!!! Thx again!!! Only 31 pounds to go;) The roast is perfectly even throughout the entire batch… Fabulous! My first 5lb roast was all over the place, but I leveled the drum (not the BBQ), and it came out perfect.

The coffee roasting is going good and really I’ve been selling quite a bit. I just wanted to let you know I did my first roast on my 8lb. drum yesterday. It went really well. I was able to get the universal rottisserie to work with a little modifying. It is very exciting roasting with this system. My cooling tray will blow the beans up in the air if its not on low! Otherwise the fans air swirling motion actually stirs the beans like there was a sweeper arm. I cant wait to give it another go. I can really see a perfect profile that will easily be developed with a few more times. Thanks alot and I’ll get you out some photos soon. Jay S.
Hey Shane– just did my 50th roast last night. I am really excited about the outcome. The 1 and 2 lb roasts go a little fast, since my grill puts out a lot of heat. But the 5 pounds are going about 15-17 minutes and the flavor is fantastic. Great product.
Eureka! 2 pounds of Mocha Kadir at 500 degrees. 1st crack at 11m30s, cut back to 480 – second crack at 14m – finish roast with a nice Full City at 15m 30 sec. – no signs of divots. Thanks again Shane. Dick
This is a note to let you know I have been having great success with my drum. Thanks for the effort you put into its design and construction.
Just did my first two roasts using your profiles. The results are beautiful! Thanks for a great product!!
We’ve just received our roaster…. THANX …. very impressive service and product!!!!!!!! will recommend you anytime!! REGARDS
Picked it up this evening and we just roasted our first batch – WOW! We are very impressed with the result. Can’t wait to do more 🙂

Thanks to all who steered me right after my poor experience with the Ronco 4000. A genuine RK drum arrived in the mail today. It’s a beefy rig—no joke! I headed out to the local welder’s supply store for a pair of good gloves, then returned home to test the drum out. I fired up the BBQ, burned off the oils etc. from the drum for 15 minutes, and let it cool. Once it was safe to touch, I got the…

Once it was safe to touch, I got the grill back up to heat, added a pound of the Zambia AA to the drum, and was off. A bit farther off than I’d hoped, as it turned out…took 22 minutes to get to second crack, but the emptying & cooling went E-Z. And man, those beans taste great! Thanks, Ron! –Paul
Hi, I whole heartily agree! I bought a motor off of Ron and what a difference it makes. the shipping was super fast and all questions were answered promptly. I am really enjoying BBQ roasting!
Ditto and more. Fantastic product but more importantly, great service before and even better after. RK for President! md
I just wanted to let everyone know that dealing with Ron Kyle was a pleasure. He patiently answered every one of my questions, made some recommendations, told me when it would be shipped and it arrived as he stated. Not only did I enjoy dealing with a man of integrity, Ron’s craftsmanship is a work of art. Thanks, Ron!
Sincerely,
Eddie
Ron, It’s such a pleasure to roast on your equipment! I want to sell my Hot Top but end up recommending your drum to perspective HT buyers. 🙂 Bob
Hi Ron, I wish the forum had dates, so I could remember when I bought your drum (#7 IS a lucky number). Anyway, I’m still roasting away in Wyoming, and am still thrilled at the roaster and results I get from it. Bought a real espresso machine this summer, and maybe that is where the rubber hits the road, because I probably have the best espresso and regular coffee in this whole state. I hope you…

Thanks again for having such a great idea.
Just roasted a pound of that Colombian peaberry you sent with my order (thanks btw 🙂 ) …..this roaster rocks!!! I am still waiting for my buddy to get my a 2×1 sheet of 20gage to use as a heat diffuser, but I had to try her out anyways. Man that was very easy!!! Very impressed with your product. I’ll send you pics of the setup in the next couple of days. Cheers,

I ended up ordering the 4# roaster, bought a new grill and did the sheet metal mods. Shipping was fast and correct. The drum is built to last a lifetime, the only thing that I should have done different was to get the 6# drum for $90.00 more. (Shane should have talked me into getting the 6# roaster.) LOL It was simple
to set up and get it going. I’ve more than maxed it out a couple of times, beans came out great. You can see the mods i’ve made to the grill and the simple bean cooler I built on Shane’s web site.
Bottom line is that the drum is top notch, works great and is well worth the money! Shane is also a great guy to talk to and will treat you right.

It is so nice to be able to roast 4 pounds of greens in around 20 minutes. My wife sells most of my coffee at her work place and they (office) could tell a big difference in the quality of coffee than the previous roaster I had. It really does an excellent job for the money that you invest.
1st crack hit at 15:50 minutes.. 50 seconds of a pause & beans went into a slow start of a rolling second crack /……Time 19:30 (complete) dumped 4 lbs (3&1/3 lbs Roasted) into a good 12+ seconds of a 2nd crack (Rolling) and slammed the brakes on 2nd crack when the beans hit my cooling fan…. let see if someone could do that with a roaster under $750.00…..Excellent+ Roaster you got there Shane!
I’ve only done a couple of roasts, and none more than about 3 pounds, But so far I’ve been getting good reviews from folks and I certainly like the coffee myself. The squeak has been minimized, the wobble in the spit largely goes away when it’s loaded up and hot, and the clasp/door has not really caused me any problems. In short, I’m loving my new roaster. Shane– drum is working great, developing a very nice patina, if you will. 7 roastings so far, fantastic flavor which to me is fuller than the fluid air bed roasts. I am getting to 2nd crack at about 12 minutes. I’d like to slow it down slightly but that’s a good time in my book.
It’s been a while since I bought my roaster. Great work, have been having good times & roasting plenty of coffee. I have even had it reviewed by the crew at Royal NY , who loved what I sent them.

Thirty seconds is all it took and away I went. It takes about 30 minutes on low to roast 4 pounds of almonds. I did my first batch and began checking at 15 minutes. In 5 minute increments I went along. The last time I checked and it still needed a bit longer I went to seal back up the drum and was SHOCKED!! Had I broken the latch ALREADY? No I discovered it pivots and was just fine. Sure will make it easier to open and close with my welding gloves on!
As usual, thanks for an FANTASTIC product!

Thanks for a great product and excellent support.

I just wanted to let you know that everything worked out great for the shipping. We christened the roaster this evening, and all went well. I am looking forward to my first cup tomorrow! Many thanks for all your coordination. Mike

Hi Ron, I received the Drum and Motor setup on Thursday, I had to make a few adjustments to get it level and in line on my Weber grill, took about 10 minutes and then let the drum burn in for about 15 minutes. Today (Saturday) I did two roasts, the first roast was a little over done but the second roast came out very nice. Each roast was 1 pound. It is going to take some practice with roast times and getting the drum into the grill without losing too much heat and getting the beans into the cooling tray but I think after 3 or 4 roasts I should have it down. The motor is very quiet and I have no problem hearing the first crack.
I am pleased with the drum and motor and look forward to many roasts, you have a great product.

I was thinking I’d serve free coffee samples on the weekends. I’m just gonna brew a pot or 2 and put out some 4/6oz cups. I would really like to show people that I roasted on a BBQ, so how do you feel about supplying me with either business cards or flyers if you have them? Or if you just sent me a p.o.p. 4×6 or 8×11 I’ll just put it in a plexi stand! Let me know if you need parts/supplies traegergrills.com makes a great thermometer for people to mount in the center of grill hood!

I can now look forward to roasting at home. I had been dreading roasting, because I could only do 1/3 cup batches before with my air roaster. It took me about 8-10 batches to roast enough for the Mrs. and I for the week.

Although my thermometer registers considerably higher than your profile for 3 to 4 #s, I still get 1st. crack at around 15 minutes and coast into 2nd. at 19 minutes. Excellent coffee!
Even better than my HotTops. My Wife and I started selling roasted coffee in our Gift Store February and I couldn't keep up with 2 HotTop roasters. Now I can catch up with orders and feel confident that the quality is still excellent.
I find that cooling is a snap with a large colander on a 5 gal. bucket with a Shop Vac. hose mounted in the side of the bucket and pulling air through the coffee. Cooldown in less than 2 minutes.
Thanks again, and keep up the great work! Connelley Barton in Rural Nebraska
Hi Randy, Here is my two cents. In my camp, coffee is mainly consumed by my wife and me. We don't guzzle the stuff, but drink enough that the Alpenrost that I initially bought had to be dragged out and fired up way to often, maybe 4-5 days or so. The Alp was my first, second, third, and fourth roaster, mainly due to quality control issues and manufacturing problems/defects. As much as I enjoyed…
As much as I enjoyed the roasting experience, it was incredibly frustrating for me because of it's uneven operation from one roast to the next, having to second guess it, reset it, cleaning it, the list goes on......
(fade out) (fade in) My roasting problems have all but vanished now. I bought one of Ron Kyles drums, (#7) for much less than the Alp. I pour in what I need, I have tried from 1-3 Lbs. now, pop it in my Weber Grill which sits outside the door here, and I get a no-hassle, perfect roast every time.
I can't tell you how happy I have been with this thing. And I'm not a salesman for Ron, I just love the product. The other day, our Wyoming temperatures fell, along with the snow. I fired up the grill, kept an eye on the time, looked for the smoke, listened for the cracking, and ended up with 3 pounds of perfectly roasted Malabar.
Since I'm doing a remodel, I try and supply my crew all the java they want, so the quantity once more is a blessing. I'm a believer in less is more, simpler is better. I wish I had saved my self the frusrationd of the Alp and gone directly to the Ron Kyle-Drum, which at that time did not exist at that time.
I hate buying things, and then buying a better one later. It's a waste of time and money. Another nice point to buying from guys like Ron (RK Roaster) and Les (Thor Tamper) on this list is that you are helping support the small entrpreneurs on this list, and not some huge multi-national corporation.
Yes, Swissmar had great customer service if you call quickly shipping replacement roasters out . I'd rather be able to speak to a person that would listen to my sugestions, and help me solve the problem.
My advice: Buy a Ron Kyle drum, and with the time and money you save you can treat your self to a new BBQ to put it in if you need one. And a THOR Tamper. Did I mention Ron's drum also did a gret job on the Haloween Pumpkin seed roasting................
